Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The foursome come roaring out of the blocks with their latest collection. The album's first single, "Beautiful Day," raced to the No. 1 slot on the U.K. singles charts and received a similar rapturous reception stateside. From its shimmering preamble to its sweeping, infectious chorus, it perfectly stakes out the middle ground between the anthemic U2 of the '80s and the more grounded group of the '90s. With Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno sharing production chores again after having taken a break with Pop, the U2 team enters the new millennium with their lineup--and mission--intact. --Steven Stolder

If U2 hadn't used the title already, "A Sort of Homecoming" might have suited this, their 10th studio album. All That You Can't Leave Behind sounds, at various points, like any or all of U2's previous albums, as if the band is sending postcards back from a protracted ramble through previously conquered territories. The euphoric opening track, "Beautiful Day," reintroduces Edge's signature delay-laden guitar, which has been pretty much absent since The Unforgettable Fire. Elsewhere, the gospel stylings of Rattle and Hum resurface on "Stuck in a Moment," and the deranged, Prodigy-influenced dance textures that characterized 1997's Pop crop up on "Elevation." None of which suggest that this commendably restless bunch is running out of ideas. Having spent the '90s making three of the most bizarre and adventurous albums ever delivered by a stadium-rock band (the consecutive masterpieces Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop), it's as if they're now trying to figure out what is the one particular thing they've always done best. Based on the evidence presented here, their forte remains a facility for making the epic statement alongside Bono's increasing lyrical intimacy: "Walk On" and "Peace on Earth" are two of the best things he's ever written or sung. All That You Can't Leave Behind confirms that U2's laurels are still making them itch. --Andrew Mueller

R. ll Said: The sellout begins... ( Aug. 18th 2010 )
This is it,folks, this is the album where it all changed for u2-from a creative musically interesting group of artists that never liked to stick to one sound for too long to a corporate pop singles-driven commodity..this album has no spark at all, only beautiful day is worth anything at all on this pointless collection of synthetic nostalgia throwbacks..just an excuse to sell-out stadiums..might as well you already sold out your integrity,u2..time for another i-pod commercial, lads? If only the bono of the 80's could see what he's become today...
Julian F. David Said: great album ( Aug. 3rd 2010 )
I remember when this came out, and I still listen to it even now. Great album, if you do not own this already, it is a must buy for lovers of alternative music and U2.
Philip Scott Wikel Said: Timeless, at least, so far ( Jul. 2nd 2010 )
The greatest thing about U2 for me is that none of their music sounds dated. Somehow they keep managing to transcend the times and time itself.
B. G. Ball Said: Great album! ( May. 29th 2010 )
It's sad that a lot of people forget this album. I have heard people say things like this decade wasn't a good decade for U2's music. But, I disagree. It really angers me a lot, to be honest. This album suprised me after hearing those false comments. U2 is still good. They just changed their style to a more modern style, that's all.
This album I would say, their Second best. I like this more than "Joshua Tree," but not as mush as "Achtung Baby." This albums theme is what really made me indulge into the songs. It's one of the happiest albums I have listen to. It's about modern day life, that is probably why I and millions of other people like me enjoy this album.
Steven Sly Said: U2 - Somewhat Return To Their Roots ( Mar. 25th 2010 )
"Leave Behind" was an album where U2 somewhat went back to their roots. The two previous discs "Pop" and "Zooropa" had delved into more experimental avenues that were received with mixed feelings from fans of the band. "Leave Behind" was somewhat a return to a more straight ahead rock format of the band's early years and is a good solid U2 release. Opening with the single "Beautiful Day" the rest of the album rolls along at a nice clip with all of the trademark U2 trappings that fans have come to love. Highlights include "Elevation", "Walk On", "Wild Honey", and "New York". I don't know if I would consider this a great U2 album, but it is a nice piece of work from a band who have been, if nothing else, at least consistent over the years.
